I have officially hit my 1 year mark living in the Big Apple. You know what they say, if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere. I came here to pursue my dream of working in the fashion industry, but I knew little of what that meant. I took a leap of faith, and followed my gut. I have learned a few things about what it takes to make it in the industry along the way. I am no expert, nor do I think I have “made it” (yet), but I AM a hustler, and so from my perspective I share with you 5 tips and tricks to make it in the industry.
- Fake it Till You Make It– You learn by doing, not by saying you don’t know how…so figure it out! Nothing is rocket science (unless it really is). We are talking FASHION here people, it’s supposed to be fun!
- Say Yes– Be a Doer, positive, optimistic and proactive. Everyone loves those people. Also, by saying “yes” you give yourself the opportunity to experience things that turn out to be very beneficial that you couldn’t have foreseen otherwise.
- Network– I cannot stress this enough. Be friendly and cordial to whoever you meet. Try to make a lasting impression and don’t forget to exchange business cards and save their info. A follow-up email never hurts either. I have created an excel sheet to save all of my fashion contacts.
- Conferences– If you don’t know about the industry, or don’t have any contacts go to as many conferences and events as possible to gain insight, and meet as many people as you can. They are so informative and helpful! In the past I have gone to FashionistaCon, and FunFearlessMoney.
- Social Media Savvy– In this day and age if you want to work in fashion, it really helps if you have a blog/Instagram fashion account. It allows you to be up to date with the fashion industry, interact with important community members, and it serves as a creative portfolio to showcase your passion and sense of style. Not to say you have to become a blogger, but more and more companies find social media marketing to be very relevant, and it wouldn’t be a bad idea to cover your bases.
