You basically have to wear a face mask when you’re in public places now, so why not purchase a mask that will make you look cute, and also help others in need?! That’s my thought!
Why?
Wearing a face mask is not only a norm in our society now, but recommended by the CDC, and in some cases mandatory in public places. As a fashion blogger you can guess I wasn’t thrilled to be wearing plain face masks all time. It’s like when you have to wear a school uniform, and you question, but what about my personal sense of style?! All jokes aside, it is important to stay safe. So I thought if I have to wear a face mask why not make it cute?
I started working on this project back in April, not long after the WHO (World Health Organization) announced Covid-19 as a global health crisis. When corona-virus first started there was a rush to get a hold of face masks. A lot of people started to make their own, and companies started donating to front-line workers. With CDC’s face mask recommendation, in many cases it’s mandatory to wear a face mask in public places so I wanted to create a face covering that would meet the guidelines.
The coronavirus is quite serious, and I know face masks are not as accessible to some people. In a time where wearing a face mask is necessary for one’s safety I wanted to partner with a local charity to help provide at a minimum the means to abide by CDC’s recommendation for a face covering. Although my masks are not N-95 masks they are 100% suitable to help protect the people wearing them. I also think N-95 masks should be reserved for frontline workers, therefore I am very excited to do my part in making a difference where I can.
Sustainability
I’ve always wanted to create my own apparel line, and starting with a necessary item, such as a fabric face mask, I thought would be a great start. As you know I’m big into sustainability, which seems like a contradiction because in order to be fully sustainable I basically shouldn’t shop. But, I believe that they can and should marry. I believe that my passion for fashion and style can still exist but with a sustainable lens.
Ever since I started working in the fashion industry 5 years ago it’s been top of mind. I thought if I’m going to create a fashion line, I have to strive to make it as sustainable as possible to do my part in being conscious about the environment.
So as a starting point I have included my sustainable measures in the detail on my product website where you can shop for my fabric face masks. I’m going to work to continue to strive to be further sustainable with time, and I vow to continue thinking of ways to be better. Obviously, it’s hard with time restraints and being an independent designer to have the means and resources to be fully sustainable but my commitment to you is that I am trying! I want to be as transparent with you as possible!
Local Charity
Here’s the story about how I decided to pick my local charity. I am originally from Maryland, and now because of Covid-19 I’m temporarily living back at home with my family, therefore I wanted to partner with a local charity. I was getting my hair done, my best friend is my hair dresser, and we were chatting up a storm. She mentioned her friend works at the Women’s Housing Coalition and proceeded to tell me about the non-profit. I did some research, hopped on a call with the organization, and knew that I found the perfect charity.
My contact at WHC mentioned that one of their buildings recently caught fire (no one was hurt TG), but that they will need to supply their new residents with face masks. She mentioned it would be really beneficial for the residents to have reusable face masks, and that they are in need. I know the donated face masks will make a direct positive impact where they are going, and I’m happy I have a personal relationship with the charity they are going to!
So please help support WHC by purchasing one of my cotton fabric face masks during my pre-sale! They are available only for a limited time! The pre-sale ends Sunday, August 23rd, which will be your last chance to buy them!
