Just like the MTV VMAs Best Music Video From Home category my second song release, “What?”, was filmed under the conditions of quarantine. We all have to get creative somehow!
My song is inspired by my time under lockdown and the stay-at-home order. Therefore, it’s even more fitting that the music video was filmed right from the home of choreographer Natacha Sinkovich in Vina del Mar, Chile. Natacha set up an impromptu film studio in her living room and danced contemporary movements to my song “What?”. She danced to her own emotions and was able to use this opportunity as an emotional outlet for her feelings during this time.
The black and white home-brewed video symbolizes the contrast between indoor/outdoor, happy/sad, and light/dark. The juxtaposition reflects my feelings during quarantine which were an emotional whirlwind to say the least. We all faced extremes in one way or another and are still facing them.
Quarantine allows for interesting opportunities, and that is also what the song is about. Coronavirus hasn’t stopped me from making an awesome music video that I’m proud of. It has allowed me to think outside the box and collaborate with my cousin all the way across the globe!
The global pandemic is no doubt a terrible thing which has caused grief, isolation, and turmoil, but there is also love, appreciation, and a chance to grow on a personal level even in our relationships with others. The song has a dark side, but is also about making the most of quarantine and the silver lining of it all.
What is What? About?
Before the pandemic hit me and my boyfriend had been in a long distance relationship for awhile. Right before the lockdown I moved in with him and stayed with him and his roommates for 3 months. It was a very transformative time.
Like many my routine was turned upside down. I was away from my city and friends, living out of a suitcase and had to rapidly adjust to all the changes. I received notice that I was furloughed from my job, the Black Lives Matter movement gained momentum as a result of the murder of George Floyd causing major protests in the city I was in, D.C., and later my dad contracted corona-virus. I’m sure you can imagine how I was feeling. But amid the turmoil came other opportunities for growth. I spent quality time with my boyfriend and we got to know each other on another level, and that’s something I will never regret.
