March is Women’s History Month, and although many people think this is unnecessary I happen to enjoy the opportunity to celebrate women’s achievements and highlight inspirational stories. Women have been oppressed throughout history, and have had to fight for basic civil and human rights up to this day. Yes, even though it’s sad that we even have to have a dedicated day let alone month, as some opposers say, I think it’s necessary. We can’t pretend that things are equal and fair and have always been. There is a past to learn from and a future to fight for.
I am so excited to have partnered with Tictail on their Women Creating History campaign. This Women’s History Month Tictail is featuring 31 days of boss babes. That is to say they are highlighting the stories of 31 of their female founded brands online and in stores hoping to help redefine what it means to be a CEO.
Only 32 of Fortune 500’s list consists of women CEO’s, which is the highest number since 1955. It’s amazing to see a 50% increase from last year, but still only representing 6.4% of the list according to Fortune. In other words we still have a long way to go.
This international holiday has me thinking of what it means to be a feminist. Unfortunately feminism has developed to have a negative connotation. People think feminists are anti-male and too extreme. Feminism is a simple matter of giving women the same and equal rights as men without being stereotyped or objectified. I want to be paid fairly, make millions, and get promoted too ya know! I’m not even going to tap into the politics of women in impoverished communities and third world countries right now, because that’s a whole other story! But as Dirty Dancing the movie puts it, “don’t put baby in a corner”, that’s right she wants center stage! Sorry for my tangent…
It wasn’t long ago that I visited the summer home of the Vanderbilt’s in Newport Rhode Island, Marble House. This is where Mrs. Vanderbilt held meetings to support the suffrage movement. Which is a reminder that the fight for equal rights has been going on for a long time and now more than ever women are empowered to voice their opinions.
On Women’s International Day I went to a panel at work and we discussed how we need to be vocal and support each other. Social media is giving women the opportunity to have a voice and to find role models where there might not be any. It is a blessing if used in the right way. I hope that through my small actions I can make a positive impact, even if small. It really starts with one person. I’ve always had the passion and determination to fight for what I want because I believe in democracy. A government for the people and by the people…and we are people so therefore I believe I have a say.
Shout-out to the amazing emerging female designers Anissa Aida, and Dolores Haze who I’ve partnered with to support Women’s International Month, and who are featured on the Tictail website and NYC boutique.
