My debut single, Memories, was released in July 2020, accompanied with a music video that can be found on YouTube. For those who haven’t seen it I turn into a mermaid for the “Memories” music video! I created a somewhat abstract music video to depict my feelings of the song in a visual and personal way. I’d love to give you some insight as to the messages and symbolism behind my direction and storytelling.
The Location
The location, Hatteras Island in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, is a very personal place for me and my family. We go there every year as a family reunion of my Dad’s side of the family and my parents have been going there for over 30 years! Before I was born! As the song is dedicated to my Dad, it was a fitting place for the location of the music video.
My Inspiration
I wanted the music video to have a magical element. I was inspired by the Harry Styles ‘Adore You’ music video and how there is a realistic narrative with surreal elements of dream and fantasy. It was important to incorporate surrealism because that’s how it feels to experience my dad who is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. It doesn’t feel real, and it’s hard to explain to anyone who isn’t experiencing it for themselves. In order to connect with my Dad now it’s as if I have to go into another dimension. You don’t speak the same language, and you have to be creative and think outside the box.
Becoming a mermaid may seem like a stretch for some but for me it was oh so natural. I love the Disney princess movies, and The Little Mermaid is my favorite Disney princess. Growing up I’d always play “mermaid” at the pool. I love the water and beach and the combination of these things just emphasizes the person I am. It was so fun shooting this music video because my dream of becoming a mermaid came true in such an abstract and unexpected way! I love how films can do that!
Now let’s dive into the storytelling part of the music video!
Storytelling
In the music video I’m at the beach, and being nostalgic for my past memories with my father. We shot at dawn because the light at that time creates a beautiful soft and dreamy feel. As I walk down the shoreline I stumble upon an object that has washed up from the ocean. I analyze and pick up what happens to be a crown! I hold the crown, close my eyes and make a wish as I place the crown on my head. Not thinking much of it, I wish to be connected with my father again. When I open my eyes I turn into a mermaid! At the end of the music video I go into the water and vanish to be reunited with my father, who is waiting for me in the magical dimension. One can imagine I am going to the mystical mermaid world at Atlantis.
